Kentucky Equine Adoption Center- An Aftercare Ally

Where is KYEAC based?

The Kentucky Equine Adoption Center (KYEAC) is located on a scenic 72-acre farm in Nicholasville, Kentucky—just outside Lexington, the renowned Horse Capital of the World.

How did your program begin?

KYEAC was founded in 2007 during a period of economic uncertainty, when a group of equine industry professionals came together with a shared vision: to create a safe haven for horses whose owners could no longer care for them due to financial hardship. In its early days, horses were left in a field with no questions asked. While our intake process has evolved significantly since then, the need remains urgent—we still receive 10 surrender requests for every horse we are able to accept and care for.

What makes KYEAC unique?

KYEAC stands out because we welcome all breeds of horses, not just Thoroughbreds. We are an adoption-focused facility, not a sanctuary, which means we are dedicated to rehabilitating, retraining, and rehoming horses into loving, permanent homes. Our mission is to help, heal, and rehome—not to provide lifelong care, but to give each horse a fresh start and a meaningful second career.

What happens when a horse is accepted into your program?

Once a horse is accepted, it undergoes a comprehensive intake examination by our veterinarian. Stallions are gelded as part of our commitment to responsible equine management and our policy against breeding. After a period of quarantine and acclimation, our experienced training staff evaluates the horse’s skills and potential. From there, we begin retraining the horse for a new purpose—whether that be as a trail companion, a therapy animal, or a riding partner.

Do you work with other locations or farms in your program?

Yes, we collaborate closely with other reputable rescues and equine organizations across the region. When possible, we assist with urgent cases and also refer owners to trusted partners if we are at capacity. These relationships strengthen the safety net for at-risk horses in Kentucky and beyond.

How many horses have gone through your program?

Since opening our doors 17 years ago, we’ve successfully placed over 1,000 horses into adoptive homes.

How does KYEAC receive funding?

Our work is made possible through a combination of grants, fundraising events, individual donations, and community campaigns. We are deeply grateful for the support of those who share our passion for equine welfare.

Tell me more about Stable Foundations.

Stable Foundations is our signature eight-week course designed for prospective adopters or individuals looking to build confidence and skills in horse care. The curriculum covers essential topics, including horse handling, grooming, nutrition, training basics, and budgeting. Offered in the spring and fall, this hands-on program ensures both humans and horses are set up for success.

Do you have a story about a horse that we can share with our readers?

One of our most heartwarming success stories is Theodore. Born on our farm in the spring of 2023, Theo’s journey began with uncertainty. His dam, rescued from Eastern Kentucky, arrived already in foal. Theo was born underweight and unable to stand on his own for the first 48 hours. With round-the-clock care, our dedicated team helped him gain strength and stability. As he grew, Theo developed a playful spirit and a unique fondness for toys and obstacle courses. He was recently adopted and is now thriving in his forever home in Pennsylvania.
