Exxtop- Retirement #9
Today was another exciting day for The Horse Fund, as we completed the purchase of Exxtop for retirement. This 5 year old gelding, was claimed by Wasabi Ventures Stables on July 30, 2021. In his second race for WVS, he was claimed away. From that time forward, Marcus Thompson trained and owned Exxtop.
As with all Wasabi horses, I have followed all of Exxtop’s works and entries. In November 2021, he earned Marcus’s first win as a trainer. More recently, Exxtop had appeared to be less interested in racing. With this change, I reached out to Marcus to let him know when the time was right, The Horse Fund could assist with a soft landing.
Retiring Exxtop
On September 5, 2023, Exxtop finished last in a $5,000 claimer at Finger Lakes by 30-1/4 lengths. It seemed like this gelding might be ready to move on from his racing career. I reached out to a connection at Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program (FLTAP) about the possibility of retiring Exxtop through them. As luck would have it, they had an open stall.
Next, I reached out to Marcus and offered to purchased Exxtop for retirement. He agreed, and a bill of sale was signed. This morning, the barn manager at FLTAP picked up Exxtop, and now his happily ever after will begin. After some downtime, he will begin groundwork training with the FLTAP trainer. Then, when ready, he will become available for adoption.
Number 9
Exxtop marks the ninth horse The Horse Fund has privately purchased for retirement. I am truly thankful for all of our supporters who makes these purchases possible. My gratitude also extends to my connections at Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program, who are giving this horse a home while he prepares for his next phase. With such great assistance, we can make amazing things happen.
